Fortis Institute defines hazing as any action or situation which recklessly or intentionally endangers the mental or physical health or safety of a student, for the purpose of initiation or admission into an affiliation with any student organization. A student organization is defined as a club, society or association in which two or more of the members are students enrolled at the Institution, whether or not the organization is established or recognized by the institution.
Hazing includes, without limitation, the following: any brutality of a physical nature, such as whipping, beating, branding, forced calisthenics, or exposure to the elements; forced consumption of any food, liquor, drug, or other substance; forced physical activity which could adversely affect the physical health or safety of a student; any activity which would subject a student to extreme mental stress, such as sleep deprivation, forced exclusion from social contact, forced conduct which could result in extreme embarrassment; or any forced activity which could adversely affect the mental health or dignity of a student and would place another person in reasonable fear of bodily harm through the use of threatening words or conduct.
Hazing is a violation of the Institution’s Code of Conduct and of the law. Failure to comply with this policy will result in disciplinary action including, potentially, dismissal from the Institution and/or criminal charges.
If you or anyone you know experiences hazing, you should report the incident to the campus president or the director of education/director of nursing. You can also report the incident to law enforcement, or to the Title IX Coordinator.
